DePIN in Focus: Unveiling the Most Promising Projects Transforming Infrastructure

The world is on the cusp of a technological revolution, and Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) are at the forefront. What started as a strange new concept, today is a fast-growing new tech segment with a huge impact on our society. DePIN projects are already shaking up traditional infrastructure models by creating distributed, user-powered networks that are more efficient, secure, and last but not least – democratic.

While startups like Helium (HNT) are building robust decentralized wireless networks, others like DIMO are improving the usage of vehicle data, or capturing the world with a decentralized imagery network – like Hivemapper. Here’s a glimpse into some of the most interesting ones:

This is the biggest and most popular DePIN project. It builds a global decentralized wireless network, owned by thousands of ordinary people. Users can install Helium hotspots which provide wireless access to devices in their vicinity and earn rewards in crypto for doing so. This model could be a game-changer for providing internet access for IoT purposes in underserved areas.

This project was recently rebranded by ATOR to emphasize its broader privacy goals.  While it started as an incentive program for the Tor network, it has shifted to building its own DePIN network, designed to be a modular privacy layer that can be integrated into existing applications and services, making privacy the default for everyone, not just tech-savvy users.

This is one of the earlier DePIN projects and today is a well-established player in this field. Filecoin creates a marketplace where users can rent out their unused storage space on a decentralized network. This competes with centralized cloud storage solutions, offering a more affordable and potentially more secure alternative.

This DePIN project utilizes dashcams to capture real-time street-level imagery, thus creating a decentralized competitor to Google Street View.  Hivemapper users earn rewards for contributing video footage to the network. This data can be used for various purposes, such as creating decentralized maps, improving traffic management, and monitoring environmental changes.

This project focuses on creating a user-powered, decentralized navigation platform. Users contribute with real-time traffic information, road conditions, and even points of interest through a mobile app. This collective data creates a more accurate and constantly updated map compared to traditional map services.

It’s another very promising platform that focuses on creating a decentralized network for rendering computer graphics. 3D artists and studios can leverage the network’s processing power for complex animations and effects, bypassing the need for expensive in-house hardware. This democratizes access to high-quality rendering for smaller studios and individual creators.

One of our favorite projects focuses on in-vehicle data. DIMO users install a device in their car that collects and shares vehicle data. This data can be used for various purposes, such as predicting maintenance needs and optimizing fuel efficiency. Users earn rewards for contributing their data to the network.

This startup takes DePIN to developing nations by creating a sustainable and scalable network of electric tuk-tuks and charging stations. They aim to replace traditional tuk-tuks, which contribute significantly to air pollution, with electric alternatives. The DePIN aspect comes from the network of charging stations and the use of tokens to incentivize participation and growth within the ecosystem.
