IoT innovations at the Mobile World Congress 2023 in Barcelona

Technologies are eating the world – this insight from the brilliant programmer and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen can hardly be overlooked by anyone nowadays. Everything around us is being digitized at an ever-accelerating pace, and there is hardly a more suitable place to see this trend than Barcelona, Spain at the beginning of March. Telecoms, new devices, smart cars and flying cars, smart homes, household appliances, and connected infrastructure were everywhere at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) held there between 27th of February and 2nd of March.

The biggest tech show in Europe

and one of the largest in the world once again brought together all technology sectors, attracting over 88,000 visitors. The event gathered also an impressive dream team of managers, entrepreneurs, visionaries, scientists, and experts from the telecom industry and a number of other tech segments.

The Congress is organized by GSMA – the global association of telecom operators, among whose members are the biggest names in the sector. Many other segments – from mobile app developers, online services and platforms, to media companies, telecom infrastructure suppliers, smartphone manufacturers, IoT developers and service providers – are also here. Internet of Things in focus

One of the leading topics during the discussions in the panels and at the exhibition stands at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was IoT. Large technology companies such as Xiaomi and Huawei, as well as a number of smaller startups demonstrated their latest developments and innovative products in this area.

Telecoms are also interested in the IoT segment, seeing in this field lots of new customers – from cars, to homes, household appliances, and a lot more. However, cellular networks are not always the best alternative for the development of an IoT ecosystem. For connecting a number of sensors and other smaller devices that only send short messages and do not require a large amount of data, the mobile connection is too expensive and energy-inefficient. This helps the rapid growth of

alternative wireless standards like LoRa,

which allows communication of multiple IoT devices at kilometers distance with minimal costs and almost without energy consumption. Such technologies are perfect for smart home sensors and a lot more applications, crucial for building the new IoT ecosystem. Therefore, quite expectedly LoRa was also among the technologies, presented at the mobile exhibition.
